Canadian Student Setting a Positive Example at Indiana Tech

Indiana Tech strives to provide excellent educational opportunities to all of its students while offering outlets in the form of athletics, clubs and other activities for them to explore their future paths to the fullest potential.

Many students make the most of every opportunity presented to them, and one current student thriving in his environment is senior student-athlete Cameron Fewster.

Fewster hails from Calgary, Alberta, and has excelled at Indiana Tech, maintaining solid grades as a mechanical engineering student while serving as a presidential ambassador. He's also become a star as a midfielder on the lacrosse team, being named to the All-NAIA First Team last season as well as earning Warrior of the Month honours in May 2026.

Finding the right academic and athletic fit

He was drawn to Indiana Tech specifically for its quality engineering program and the reputation of its men's lacrosse team.

“When I was looking for schools, Indiana Tech was in the process of renovating the Zollner building, providing lots of support for the engineering and sciences programs here,” Fewster said. “In athletics, the lacrosse team has a high standard of performance, competing in the national tournament every year since its introduction.”

He says the connections he's made have allowed him to get into rooms with great people, and he highlighted “the many internal and external events” that have encouraged him to grow as an individual more than he would have imagined, developing skills that can be extremely beneficial in the real world.

Recognized as a campus leader

Fewster was also the student selected to give the annual convocation speech during the ceremony in late August.

Senior vice president for student affairs Dr. Dan Stoker is tasked with selecting the convocation speaker annually.

“I keep an eye out for students who are respected by their peers, present themselves well one-on-one and are involved with the campus. I have never identified someone as easily as Cameron,” Dr. Stoker said. “He impressed me last year through his interactions as a presidential ambassador. He is an accomplished student-athlete on our men's lacrosse team and is strong academically. He is the full package.”

“Cameron was great to work with this year and really set the tone to kick off the year well,” he added.

Fewster described the opportunity as a great honour and proof that the work he's putting in is being recognized by the community.

“Although I still have a year until I graduate, the responsibility gave me a sense of ‘I made it' coming to the end of my college career,” said Fewster. “Looking back at the years I have spent at Tech, I would not have expected that the work I did would have the result of being the representative of the graduating class, but every new commitment and moment of growth was another step towards that point.”

A welcoming experience for an international student

For Canadian students on the fence about a move to the United States, Fewster says he's thrilled with his experience at Indiana Tech and would not have wanted his university experience to go any other way.

“As an international student, the community has been extremely welcoming, and the faculty is always there to help with needs as a student on a visa,” he said. “Learning to live and grow in the changing dynamic of being an international student can be overwhelming, but the community and resources here have allowed the entire process to be much more comforting and easy to handle.”

He encourages any student considering Indiana Tech from a distance to visit the campus if they can, in order to get a sense of what it's like in person.

“It makes the experience even better than how it looks virtually,” he said.
